Becasa’s Sustainability Efforts
Our vision integrates sustainability into everything we do and gives us the opportunity to take meaningful action. We continue to embed sustainability more deeply into our strategy and explore the opportunities there are in making the everyday extraordinary not just now, but in the future as well.
Challenging
Since 2019, the three main Becasa company sustainability commitments are to be a carbon-neutral business, offer circular products and services, and have a positive impact.
Creating Zero Emissions
At Becasa, we are acutely aware of our responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint across the entire value chain. We need to continuously reinvent and finetune our processes, our partnerships, and, last but not least, our products, to help reduce global emissions. Our philosophy is to always choose the greener option. We particularly focus on optimizing and reducing our emissions in the following areas:
We have a reduced ship by air as far as possible policy at our company – a relatively easy measure to take that does not affect our operations too greatly. We always inform our customers of the positive impact of transporting a product by sea rather than air when we ship goods from our factory. When shipping by sea, our aim is to transport fully loaded containers or by LCL. To lower emissions, we often adjust the loads we ship.
Naturally, our goal is to use as little packaging as possible. Meanwhile, it is important to us not to compromise on product quality or safety, which is why we are unable to entirely forego packaging. We work hard to make it as easy as possible for end-users to correctly recycle our packaging materials. We clearly mark the different materials, for example, and avoid using packaging that consists of multiple materials, as this makes it harder to separate and recycle them.
Most of our greenhouse gas emissions stem from our production. This is also the hardest area to calculate precise figures for. Currently, we’re doing our best efforts to increase our use of renewable energy. For example, we have invested in a factory that can turn ceramic waste into permeable bricks and applied it to the construction of “sponge city” surface engineering.
Becasa’s first focus is to reduce our emissions, this is the goal we will forever work hardest to achieve. In an ideal world, our emissions would obviously have been zero. Although that target remains out of reach, we’ll be investing in projects that either capture and store carbon or reduce emissions.
Creating Best Quality
Our quality management is rooted in the ISO 9001 standard, a tool that helps us manage processes and determine what measures we need to take on an everyday basis. We continuously manage quality across our operations, from ensuring our products are delivered safely, to making sure our office employees are happy with their work and have everything they need, to producing products that are highly durable.
Creating Engagement
This is perhaps the most important cornerstone of our sustainability efforts, the one factor that is crucial to achieving our goals. We asked ourselves what we felt was important in terms of business partners as manufacturers and suppliers. If we would like to produce more sustainable products, we realized our staff would need more extensive expertise, plenty of patience, commitment, and a strong drive. We believe close partnerships open up more opportunities.
Creating Inspiration
We believe change – and perhaps even magic – is the result of partnerships, of being attuned to and interested in the world around you. It’s important to us to applaud good ideas, to encourage and support those who dare break the mold. We want to be inspired and, hopefully, inspire others in turn. Together, we can leverage our imagination and find the motivation to think outside the box.
Creating Social Sustainability
Our entire value chain is based on and made up of individual people. It is up to us to safeguard these people’s well-being and to make working with Becasa feel worth it to them. Above all, we need to do everything we can to protect the well-being of those workers we never or rarely get to meet and to make sure their working environment is safe and secure.
Creating Circularity
Developing a circular business model and a circular economy is a prerequisite for future generations to be able to thrive. We see ‘circular’ as a broad concept, so we work to close the loop on several different levels.
Our goal is to try and maximize our use of recycled resources as we produce products, while still retaining the ability to assess the quality of these resources and the chemicals used in them (which can be a challenge with recycled materials). We also want to do our best to reuse existing goods and byproducts – like the ceramic leftover from the production of ceramic. When treated correctly, ceramic waste can be turned into permeable bricks.
REUSED your PACK is a tentative creative idea that we hope to inspire people to give Becasa packaging a second life. Even though our goal is to always use as little packaging as possible, products always require at least some packaging to protect them as they’re being transported and handled in different warehouses. Instead of instantly throwing packaging into the recycling bin, why not reuse it in other ways?
